Turbochargers generally consist of the following 8 main components.
1. Turbine housing – main components of turbocharger
It is the casing that surrounds the turbine wheel. It is typically made of cast iron or stainless steel and is designed to withstand high temperatures and pressures.
2. Turbine wheel – main components of turbocharger
The main components of a turbocharger are driven by the engine’s exhaust gases. The wheel is typically made of heat-resistant materials like Inconel or titanium.
3. Compressor housing – main components of turbocharger
This is the casing that surrounds the compressor wheel. It is designed to help direct the flow of air into the engine and is typically made of aluminum or cast iron.
4. Compressor wheel – main components of turbocharger
There are the main components of a turbocharger that compresses the air before it enters the engine. The wheel is typically made of aluminum or other lightweight materials.
5. Center housing(Bearing housing) – main components of turbocharger
This is the part of the turbocharger that connects the turbine housing and the compressor housing. It also contains the bearings that allow the turbocharger to spin.
6. Bearing system – main components of turbocharger
This includes the journal bearings and thrust bearings that support the rotating shaft and helps reduce friction.
7. Wastegate – main components of turbocharger
This valve helps control the exhaust gas entering the turbine housing. It helps prevent the turbocharger from over-boosting, which can damage the engine.
8. Oil system – main components of turbocharger
The turbocharger requires an oil supply to lubricate the bearings and cool the turbine and compressor wheels. The oil system typically includes an oil supply line, an oil return line, and an oil filter.
With the development of technology, the following main components have appeared on the turbocharger.
9. Turbo actuator – main components of turbocharger
The turbo actuator is designed to open or close a valve connected to the wastegate on the turbocharger.
Early turbochargers used mechanical actuators. With the development of turbocharging technology, electronic turbo actuators appeared on later turbochargers. It is a device used to control the boost pressure produced by a turbocharger in an internal combustion engine. It is an electromechanical device typically controlled by the engine’s electronic control module (ECM) or engine control unit (ECU).
By opening or closing the wastegate valve, the turbo actuator can regulate the amount of exhaust gas that flows over the turbine wheel, which controls the speed of the turbine and compressor wheels.
When the engine is operating under low loads or at low speeds, the turbo actuator will typically keep the wastegate valve closed, allowing the turbocharger to produce maximum boost pressure. This helps to improve engine performance and efficiency. However, when the engine is operating at high loads or at high speeds, the turbo actuator will open the wastegate valve, allowing some of the exhaust gas to bypass the turbine wheel and reducing the boost pressure.
10. Nozzle Ring – main components of turbocharger
A nozzle ring is a main component of a turbocharger(VNT turbo) that is designed to help control the flow of exhaust gases that drive the turbine wheel. It is a ring-shaped component that is typically made of cast iron or stainless steel and is located inside the turbine housing of the turbocharger.
A Variable Nozzle Turbine (VNT) turbocharger is a type of turbocharger that is designed to provide improved performance and efficiency over traditional fixed geometry turbochargers. Unlike a fixed geometry turbocharger, which has a fixed set of vanes in the turbine housing, a VNT turbocharger has adjustable vanes that can be adjusted to change the flow of exhaust gases through the turbine.
